Goals

I forgot to put up a blog last week.

Last week, I learned how to use the strobe light. Surprisingly, it really wasn't as hard as I had thought it was. I took pictures of the equipment and took notes to on how to set up the strobe light.

Today, I had studio time set up to practice the strobe light. I wanted to take pictures of everyone and to work on the strobe light demo worksheets. BUT...I forgot there was a field trip today so my studio plans will be on hold until after spring break.

My homework is to continue to read my book Light, Science, and Magic. Take notes. Keep experimenting with light.

I'm going to check out a lighting kit from Cho on Friday so I can practice lighting at home. Hopefully, my electric won't go out. I think that I'll start small and do a still life.

Notes to Caitlin on green screen

I found the chapter that you should read in the final cut pro manual.

When you open FCP, go to Help -> Final Cut Pro User Manual

That opens up an Acrobat File. Put in "III-421" (the letter "i" 3 times)

That will bring you to chapter 20, you should read the whole thing, I think you will really like the techniques they talk about. The part that specifically tells you how to work with green screen is the Chroma Keyer, iii-430-439.

Making Image size smaller in photoshop so it won't look pixelated:

view camera plan

I have divided my learning of the View Camera into 3 stages.

Stage One: Orthocromatic
First i will be using 5x7 Orthocromatic Lith Film, which is a film used for black and white photos and easier to develop in the dark room due to the fact that it is not sensitive to the spectrum of red-orange lights, so I can just take it out of the camera and develop it in the dark room with the amber-colored safe light.

Stage Two: Panochromatic
After the Orthocromatic film, i will move on to Panochromatic film, a black and white film that is sensative to all colors of light, thus craeting a photo with more detail, but more difficult to develop in the darkroom. I will be using a special tank that will hold the sheet film and protect it from the safe light.

Stage Three: COLOR!
This is the most exciting stage. I will be using color film in the view camera. Im not sure which kind yet. I am thinking about investing in some Poloroid 55 film. whopety doo dah!

sarah's before and after

Things I did:
1) edit out freckles
2) fix uni brow
3) photoshop light effects
4) color adjustment in curves
5) sepia photo filter
6) a bit of saturation fix
7) make under eye bags lighter

VIEW CAMERA

My goal for this semester, amongst many other things, is to learn and master the usage of the View Camera. Why? Well, although the view camera was developed around the same time as the Daguerreotype, its still used today to control not only focus but onvergence of parallel lines. Because of this, the view camera is an ideal tool for architectural photography, because it has a grid on the ground glass, so when youre looking through the camera you can use the parallel lines to line up with whatever to create the perfect photo. I became interested in using the view camera after a photo series i started , and am still working on inspired by nostalgic landscapes. The series is also about the idea of an over abundance of vacancy and emptiness in a world that seems so built-up and over run by people and industries. It seems that people take a place and build it up to better accommodate themselves and then just abandon it. This was the first photo of the series:

Back to the View Camera, I wanted to the horizon line to be a dominant factor in all the photos. Symmetry is also a factor i am thinking about, keeping the photos simple and symmetrical, with no extra content i want to achieve a sort of horizontal flatness of plane, similar to a Rothko painting. The view camera would be perfect for achieving this kind of perfect symmetry.

Clarification to Masha

Polaroid 55 is black&white film, not color. It can be used for making color prints with the gum bichromate process in alt. process... but it is not a color neg.

Megan's Notes

-I signed up a studio time with Cho on Wed at 3:30. He's going to review with me the strobe light. And hopefully, I can get a model for the demo. If not, then I'll just use a still life then.

-Then I'll be practicing on Thursday at 9:30.

-Here are some links that I'll be getting lighting info from. www.studiolighting.net

And I was thinking about putting up pics from my practice photo shoot on istock.com and flickr.com

Questions for Sarah

Sorry you are sick!

Could you post the link to Amy Dresser's website. It might be fun for us to look at.

I'll send an e-mail today about lynda.com. If you aren't too sick you can try that from home and let us know how the tutorials are.

sarah's notes

Things I've done so far:

-Found out the name of Jill Greenberg's photo retoucher: Amy Dresser
-Found a website that has a tutorial on how Amy retouches her photos. I tried it myself, and it went ok. I've been trying to practice, and i think it's been getting better.
-I've been reasearching general retouching techniques. Such as, skin smoothing and how to get rid of dark under eye circles. I've tried them out and been pretty happy with the results.
-I've been working pretty hard trying to retouch some of my own photos, and it's been going pretty well, so I think I'm on the right track.

Michelle's Notes

In class today:
  • I emailed Jim so I can set up a time to learn how to use the 4800/9800 printers in the print center
  • ordered inkjet silk samples from the Dharma Trading Co.
For next week:
  • create printer profiles for silk (if silk arrives in time) using eye-one match software
  • meet with Jim
